Melanie Phillips has this comment on an article in The Weekly Standard concerning the Saudi's and America's relationship with them.
...From the start of the war on terror, the US has failed to act against its Saudi ally. When the history of this whole saga comes to be written (if anyone remains in the west to do so) it will surely be seen that far from the gung-ho war-monger that he is painted by his enemies, President Bush failed to act against the rogue state that -- along with Iran -- is the fount of the jihad against the west, and yet seems to have le tout Washington in the folds of its robes.
I agree with Melanie, to a point. But there's a problem.
How does the US go after everyone or for that matter anyone? Most of the world, led by the world press, has fought the US tooth and nail, every step of the way, in this war on terror. The US couldn't get the UN to authorize the war in Iraq because France, Russia and China were bribed. Melanie doesn't tell us how we could get permission to wage war in Saudi Arabia. Or is she advocating unilateral action? She provides no answers; just go get'em. The very thing the world criticizes the US for all the time.
The anti-war movement is well funded, well led and aided by the world press. For freeing the people of Afghanistan and Iraq, America is branded a war monger and a crusader.
Yes Iran and Saudi Arabia have a case to answer for.
But then how best to fight the war on terror? I'm not privy to the White House plan but maybe it consists of trying to plant democracy in the middle east and let it spread. Wouldn't a peaceful transition to democracy by these regimes be preferable to war? Look how Libya gave up its' weapons of mass destruction without a shot. And the sings are that things are improving in Libya in other areas.
It's all well and good you criticizing Bush for failing to act without knowing his plan or offering a better plan, Melanie.
