Britain - Fewer people 'visiting the pub'

Remember this when the smoking ban comes in next year. The pro smoking lobby will claim it's the ban on smoking that causes fewer people to go to the pub. But as you can see the decline has already started.

Research agency TGI says in 1987, 17% of adults went out to drink more than once a week compared with the present figure of 12%, or 5.5 million adults.

However, the number of people who drink has remained constant at 40 million.

The survey says more people drink at home, with increased social stigma about drink driving one of the factors. [Not to mention the prices!]

Other figures show the number of 18-24-year-olds who visit the pub once a week has dropped.

In 1987, this age bracket accounted for 18% of all those who went to the local once a week, compared with 11% today.
