Iraq - Al-Qaeda 'coming to end in Iraq'

That's the BBC's headline for a breaking story on documents captured as a result of Zarqawi's death. The report gives few details so far but here is what others are reporting.

From CNN

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's national security adviser said al Qaeda in Iraq documents confiscated in recent days provide a wealth of information to security forces fighting the terror network.

"We believe that this is the beginning of the end of al Qaeda in Iraq," said Mowaffaq al-Rubaie at a news conference Thursday in Baghdad. "This is a very good day for Iraq."

He said "thumb drives or flash disks," a laptop and other documents have been seized in various hideouts. He said the data will help authorities determine the whereabouts of the network, its leaders, weapons, meetings and how it operates.

From Reuters

Rubaie said the documents showed that al Qaeda's central strategy was to "divide, destroy and rule".

He added: "These documents have given us the edge over al Qaeda and (they) also gave us the whereabouts of their network, of their leaders, of their weapons and the way they lead the organisation and the whereabouts of their meetings."

No doubt al Qaeda will be changing much of that by now and the violence will not end soon. But, let's hope this provides a breakthrough and will mark the end of al Qaeda in Iraq.

UPDATE

Just saw a briefing by US commanders on Fox News reporting that as a result of the information gained over 700 terrorists have been arrested, 140 killed and 28 weapons dumps discovered. Hopefully there will be more to come.
