I like the way the Post portrays the story.
But in the Third Ward and elsewhere, some voters are no longer deciding on Jefferson based on his résumé or his legislative record, but on the $100,000 the FBI allegedly videotaped him accepting from an FBI informant.
FBI agents later found $90,000 in marked bills in Jefferson's freezer, wrapped in foil. The other $10,000 was missing but accounted for.
Allegedly? The two other principals in the case have pleaded guilty and have been convicted.
And I like the way Jefferson tries to spin things.
In a TV ad, he talks about "the presumption of innocence afforded every person" and says, "For over 18 months, the federal government has investigated me and has yet to bring a single charge against me."
Well for starters, as usual in such cases, the government goes after the small fish and gets them to testify against the big fish - Jefferson. Now that the two other small fish have pled guilty and been convicted, the government will go after Jefferson.
Secondly, the court ordered Jefferson's siezed records sealed for two months. That slowed but hasn't stopped the investigation. Investigations work on thier schedule and not the election's schedule.
Notice that Jefferson doesn't explain how the FBI marked %90 grand ended up wrapped in tin foil in his freezer. And notice that the Post doesn't say what the %10 grand was spent on and by whom.
