Many of the elites think so because they see an analogy with 1994 and how Clinton got reelected two years later.
But 2010 isn't the same, for a whole host of reasons
- Clinton failed to get HillaryCare through, so didn't have anything there to defend. Obama is saddled with a hugely unpopular bill he forced through - Gingrich overreached in the House and made himself look bad, Boehner won't do that - The GOP controlled both the Senate and the House after 1994, so Clinton could complain about a "do nothing Congress." Now, the Dems still control the Senate, so the public will continue to hold them responsible - Obama is an ideologue in a way Clinton wasn't. - The GOP foolishly nominated Bob Dole in 1996, a candidate destined to lose. Now that we've gotten John McCain out of the way we won't make that mistake again... I hope.
