Scotland - Muslim School Sub-Standard

A boarding school for Muslim girls near Dundee will be closed in three months unless sweeping improvements are made.

Seems they aren't teaching the girls very much.

While praising the sincerity of staff, HMIE reported there were no social subjects, science or expressive arts being taught. While most pupils obtained qualifications in English, maths and Urdu, girls aged over 16 had no opportunity to progress and "studied a very limited secular curriculum, consisting of Arabic, sewing and cookery".

And contact with the outside world was limited.

HMIE also told the school it needed to prepare girls to "play their part as Muslims in a culturally diverse Scotland".

The response to this was to supply pupils with newspapers and magazines – there is a religious objection to television. A ban on the use of the internet had been lifted, but the girls' contact with the outside world was limited to going swimming, visiting the library and taking walks.

A similar school has already been closed.

The only other Muslim school founded in Scotland, the Iqra Academy in Shawlands, Glasgow, was closed down in May last year, after damning HMIE reports.
