US - Left hastening the clash of civilizations?

The Belmont Club has an interesting take.

If the Left had not been so relentlessly politically correct it might have been able to shape the debate according to its avowed (or should I say "so-called") principles. But they gave that chance up in exchange for the cheap thrill of anti-Americanism. Now even they find themselves decrying the Dubai Ports World deal because -- although they will never put it that way -- President Bush is a fool to trust these people with the gateway into America. They may even be conscious of the tightening of the logical rope around their necks even as they pull on it. But though they've hit bottom they keep digging. The New York Times has announced that it will sue the DOD to force the federal government agency to turn over classified material in connection with its NSA surveillance stories. At one level they may think this is clever, but strategically it is (in my opinion) very, very stupid.

Time will tell whether the war on terror remains within the bounds of limited confrontation with rogue elements within the "religion of peace" or whether -- due to some conceptual fault in the campaign or the persistent obstruction by the politically correct -- it morphs into a more general confrontation between belief systems and civilizations.

And he notes Glenn's concerns that the war may have begun.

Glenn Reynold writing at MSNBC wonders aloud whether a public opinion tipping point has been reached in the war on terror. But it's not the tipping point you think.

With the Cartoon Wars giving way to the ports imbroglio, Jim Geraghty, blogging from Turkey, wonders if we're seeing a tipping point in Western attitudes toward Islam. Geraghty collects a lot of quotes, and writes of "my sense that in recent weeks, a large chunk of Americans just decided that they no longer have any faith in the good sense or non-hostile nature of the Muslim world. If subsequent polls find similar results, the port deal is dead."

The signs have been there for years as this list of terror attacks shows. Not to mention 3/11, Bali and 7/7 attacks on London as well as a host of others around the world, both successful and foiled.

In addition, at the mere suggestion that Islam has been "insulted", Muslims in their hundreds of thousands go on a rampage killing and burning. Anyone who dares speak out or criticize Islam is either threatened or murdered.

We are constantly told by the media, politicians and so called "moderate" Muslims, that all the trouble comes from a few militants bent on hijacking their "peaceful" religion.

If that's true, why are the vast body of world wide Muslims so silent? They took to the streets several weekends in a row to protest over the Muhammad cartoons. Have you ever seen them take to the streets and protest over the supposed hijacking of their religion? Have you ever seen a Muslim protest march against bin Laden, Zarqawi and al Qaeda? These are the ones they claim are at the heart of the militant groups hijacking Islam, so why no fatwas or protest against them?

Muslim silence on terrorists and terrorism aids the enemy and gives the West the impression they agree with them.

Add to that the double standards Muslims apply to other religions. We're suppose to respect them and their religion but they are allowed to be intolerant of other religions. You can bring a Koran into Britain or the US but you can't take a Bible into Saudi Arabia. You can wear a burka in the UK and US but you can't wear a cross in Saudi Arabia.

As I said earlier, Muslims around the world go nuts at the mere hint of an insult to their religion but so called "moderate" Muslims are silent on Muslim crimes against Christians.

While we are being openly attacked by a so called "militant" group within Islam, "moderate" Muslims remain silent. While other religions are openly persecuted, Muslims remain silent. When Muslims are attacked they riot but when the West is attacked Muslims remain silent.

As "militant" Muslims attack us openly on one front, "moderate" Muslims aid them with their silence and double standards and all the while, quitely, they impose their will on their host countries. It's a classic attack on two fronts - a large noisy feint while the real attack comes from within.

The Left and the lying left wing media helped bring this war about.

Is it any wonder people are finally fed up.

UPDATE

More here.

Now, that being said, the level of hostility towards Muslims has in my opinion skyrocketed in the United States, especially over the last couple of years. However, that's not because of George Bush, it's because nary a day passes without reading about some Muslim committing a horrible atrocity in the name of Allah while screeching Imams demand more bloodbaths in front of packed houses at Mosques around the world. Meanwhile, the reaction from Muslim "moderates" has been muted at best. Maybe that's because they're afraid of the radicals. Maybe they are speaking up in great numbers and the media's ignoring them.

Or -- or -- maybe a lot of "moderate" Muslim just don't have that big of a problem with blowing up school buses full of Jews, cutting off the heads of European hostages, or blowing up a train full of Spaniards. Hopefully, that's not the case, but it's hard for people to miss the fact that there are huge crowds of Muslims gathering all over the world to protest a cartoon that was published in Denmark, but few Muslims seem interested in demonstrating against the terrorist attacks committed in the name of Islam against "the infidels".

Again, maybe the media's ignoring those voices of dissent or the moderates are just afraid, but the fact that the extremists are very loud and heard from frequently while the "moderates" speak softly and seem to be seldom heard is having a real affect on people's perceptions of Islam.

Does that mean we're reached a "tipping point"? Actually, I'd say it's more like a long, downhill slide, that's apt to continue unless "moderate" Muslims start loudly and continuously speaking up. There are Muslims out there doing exactly that, but they could use a lot more company. Of course, people have been pointing that out since 9/11 and we haven't seen much of an improvement in the situation, so it doesn't seem to be likely that we're going back up that mountain any time soon -- and that's really too bad for everyone concerned.

Read this too.

Clarification. In this statement, "The Left and the lying left wing media helped bring this war about.", "this war" refers to the clash of civilizations. That's the title of this post and thought that it was clear I ment a war between civilizations. Obviously it's not that clear to some.

UPDATE

It would appear a great number of people around the world agree with me. Note the location of the commenters and how many people said they agreed with the comment made in answer to this question: "Is Islamism the new "global threat"?"
