World - Illegal Immigration: Topic number one

In this age of global terrorism, governments around the world are struggling with how to tackle their illegal immigrant population and allay voters fears. And make no mistake, fear is what's ultimately behind the immigration debate.

Britain says it will take 10 years to deport all of their illegal immigrants.

America is going to post troops on her border to stem the tide while congress sturggles to come up with a plan to deal with the 11 million illegals in the country.

France wants to enact tougher laws to make it harder to immigrate there.

It's not just the illegal immigrants that have people worried. Although, I suspect people are focusing on this segment of immigrants because they should be, in theory, the first and easiest to deal with. They are breaking the law after all.

It's been 5 years since 9/11 and in the interval since, the world has suffered waves of Muslim terrorist attacks. Madrid, Bali, Egypt and London have all been targets; not to mention foiled plots all over the globe.

But it's not just the Muslim terrorism that has people worried. It's deeper than that and involves the breakdown of western culture as seen by the recent French riots, Muslim appeasement in Britain and the disaster unfolding in Sweden. These are but a few examples.

America has witnessed all of this and while she turned a blind eye to illegal immigrants pouring in from Mexico for years, as evidenced by the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants, Americans are nervous. The recent illegal immigrant marches, organized in part by the communist led anti-war movement and various Islamist groups, backfired. Americans were horrified to see the American flag flown below the Mexican flag or upside down, waves of Mexican flags and anti-American posters.

Likewise, Britons were horrified to see calls for the end of freespeech and beheadings when Muslims marched in London to protest the Muhammad cartoons. Here again, these protests were ogranized by the communists led anti-war movement and the Islamists.

America is at the front leading the world war on Muslim terrorism. To many Americans, it makes no sense to wage war around the world and not secure your own borders. On the other hand, Islamists see open borders as a weak link in the chain; hence their involvement in the illegal immigrant demonstrations.

In the wake of 9/11 and the continuing Muslim terrorists attacks around the world, countires continue to tighten their airports and seaports. The intelligence community continues to build and expand their capabilites to thwart these attacks. Dispite the cries of erosion of civil liberties, these measures have prevented dozens of Muslim terror attacks - but sadly, not all.

As for the Mexicans, sadly, they are caught up in this mess. Make no mistake, US (and by the way European) immigration policies have been a mess for decades and it's going to be long and painful to sort it out. But likewise, make no mistake, the reason we are at this juncture today, is because of Muslim terrorism and the spread of militant Islam.

Little known to Americans, and indeed the world, there is a direct connection between illegal Mexican immigrants and the Muslim terror attacks of 9/11. Michelle has the video.

Now, what was that Paul Reynolds of the BBC was saying about blogs being just another source of information and not a provider of information?

UPDATE

Seems American law makers are listening to the voters.

May 18, 2006 -- WHEN the Senate voted by a stunning 83-16 in favor of a reinforced fence along the Mexico border yesterday, it showed that lawmakers are feeling get-tough winds blowing from the grass roots.

Even 2008 presidential prospects like Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.) voted for the 370-mile fence, and several Democrats who first voted no switched nervously to yes.

"Voters are very clear that they want the situation at the border addressed first," said independent pollster Scott Rasmussen, who's found huge enforcement-first majorities in 33 states he polled.

"The real debate isn't about what to do with the illegal aliens who are already here," Rasmussen said. "It's about what to do to keep more from coming here."

The House has already voted for a 698-mile border fence, so any compromise bill ultimately worked out by the House and Senate will have to include a barrier.

It will be interesting to see if Kerry flip flops on the issue when the compromise bill is voted on. In other words will he be for it before he's against it. Kerry filp flopped on the Israeli's secruity fence. First he was against it before he was against it.
