The Treasury took action yesterday to stop the households of people suspected of links to al-Qa'eda and the Taliban from receiving state benefits and tax credits .
Under United Nations resolutions passed in 2002 to freeze the assets of named individuals believed to be involved in terrorism, benefits and credits are already withheld from a number of terror suspects living in the UK.
Until now, their wives and relatives have been able to continue claiming child benefit or tax credits, which the Government suspected could be redirected to fund terror.
Ed Balls, the Economic Secretary to the Treasury, announced changes to the rules to block anyone sharing a house with a listed person from getting cash in this way.
