Iraqi Security Forces ‘stepping up to the plate’

More progress.

A local informant provided Lt. Col. Ma'ad, battalion commander, Iraqi Military Academy, with key information about a possible insurgent cell location, leading to IA soldiers conducting an early morning cordon and search on multiple locations in the Southern part of Zafariniya June 21. [...]

During the combined cordon and search, the Iraqi Army was attacked by small-arms fire but suffered no injuries or damage to personnel or equipment. The operation netted 10 detainees, along with numerous bottles of unknown chemicals. The Iraqi Army also uncovered two notable terrorist cells, one of which involved a militia battalion commander in Baghdad.

"They were very happy to have captured this insurgent, (whom) they called the ‘big fish,’" said Morris. The next location led to another high-valued individual and his six sons.

This is something the Iraqi Army and coalition forces are getting good at. They recieve a tip, act on it quickly, gain new intelligence and act again on it quickly.

Here's another example from the same report.

After missing the suspect at one house, an occupant provided intelligence on the suspected terrorist and accompanied Soldiers to the individual’s house.

After knocking on the door and identifying themselves, Soldiers were fired upon through the front door by the suspects. A squad of Iraqi and U.S. Soldiers moved to the back of the house, where the terrorist crashed through the back door and raised an AK-47 at the Soldiers. The Soldiers shot the terrorist. Medics on the scene attempted to treat the suspect and an air-medical evacuation helicopter was dispatched. The terrorist died as the helicopter landed.

Soldiers found 12 hand grenades, sniper ammunition and magazines, parachute flares, and hundreds of explosive primers inside the individual’s house.

“It’s encouraging to see that Iraqis are taking action in their own neighborhoods,” said Capt. Colin Brooks, commander, Co. B, 2-8 Inf. “Iraqi Soldiers, despite a heated exchange of small-arms fire, were consummate professionals and fought shoulder-to-shoulder with their American counterparts.”

Read the rest as you won't see this on the BBC.
