UK - Harrods bars uniformed soldiers

Here's their excuse.

The store has stood by their dress policy, saying: “There is a long-standing tradition at Harrods that would normally preclude customers who are wearing non-civilian attire from entering the store.

“A lot of people assume that somebody in uniform is either there on official duty, which could cause them alarm, or they assume they’re a member of staff and ask them where the lavatories are and so on.”

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that the British public recognize their countries uniforms.

I'm not familiar with Britain's customs as regards military uniforms in public places. I was at the pub after rememberance day services and several RAF men came in and approached the bar. They asked to speak to the manager and the bar maid replied she was in charge. The RAF officer in charge asked if he and his men were allowed into the pub in uniform. The woman looked starteled and replied of course, certainly.

The men were welcomed by the public who thanked them for their service and bought all their drinks. After they left, I asked some locals if the law required them to obtain permission before entering the pub in uniform or if it was a military requirement. No one seemed to know.
