I can't find any large scale long term studies linking salt consumption with hypertension and heart disease, it is just a "well know" fact salt causes this.
The lack of salt does cause death, just talk to anyone from africa about not getting enough salt.
On top of that, I don't think it's the government's business to tell us what we can and can't eat.
