Lessons from D-Day

From the opinion page of The Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune

Sixty years ago, the men who stormed the German defenses in Normandy answered, perhaps for all time, America's most basic questions about itself. Can we do this? Is the United States worthy of international leadership? Can a democracy prevail in an armed clash with a totalitarian regime rooted in an evil ideology?

Yes, yes and yes.

[...]

Can we succeed in building a new Iraq? Do our core values of democratic government and freedom of expression still hold the potential to inspire people around the world? Can a free society prevail in a struggle against an enemy for whom suicide bombing amounts to just one more military tactic?

Yes, yes and yes.

Why are we so sure?

Because that's what we learned from D-Day.
