More than 1,500 Iraqi troops ended late last week a four-day operation to purge the city of unruly armed groups.
The operation was carried out with limited assistance from U.S. troops whose only participation was “restricted to the formation of a cordon around the city” to prevent “armed men from fleeing,” said an Iraqi army statement.
The statement said the operation ended with the arrest of 36 people. Iraqi troops suffered no casualties, it added.
Gunmen are active in most of Mosul, believed now to be the country’s second largest city.
“The citizens welcomed and assisted the troops as they pressed ahead with their operation,” the statement added.
