UK - Muslims: Stop classes so we can pray

That's what some Muslims want.

Muslims want to stop university lessons so they can pray. Students at Newcastle University are calling for change in the timetable between 12noon and 2pm on Fridays to allow them to attend Jumah Prayer time.

An emergency meeting is being held today to ask the Students' Union to back their cause.

The University says Muslims are free to attend prayer sessions during lectures and tutorials but the Islamic Society says people are missing out on teaching and this is unfair.

Raed Al-Ahamdi, president of the Islamic Society, said: "Nobody stops us from praying but it means we have to miss lectures and tutorials and this can lead to other problems.

"You have to choose between lectures and prayers and that is not fair.

Neither is it fair for Muslims to want everybody else to change their behavior just so they can practice their religion.
