CBS: "Of all the famous names associated with CBS News, the biggest and brightest on the marquee are Murrow, Cronkite and Rather," McManus said. "With the utmost respect, we mark the extraordinary and singular role Dan has played in writing the script of not only CBS News, but of broadcast journalism."
Really? Then why didn't CBS renew his contract which isn't due to expire until November anyway?
Rather's contract with the network was scheduled to expire in November, but he was unable to reach agreement with CBS on a new pact. He had worked as a correspondent for 60 Minutes since stepping down as anchor of the CBS Evening News last year.
As I understand it, Rather wasn't even offered a new agreement.
Rather will best be remembered for "Rathergate". In that scandal Rather tried to steal the 2004 Presidential election for John Kerry by using forged documents in an attempt to smear Bush.
UPDATE
CBS and Rather both confirm he was not offered an agreement.
Asked why the network is dropping the 74-year-old Rather, McManus said: "We just couldn't come up with an arrangement that had enough work to satisfy both him and CBS. If there had been a scenario that would have provided a workload that made sense for both CBS and Dan, we would have pursued that, but unfortunately that was not the case."
So much for the Murrow comparison then, eh?
