Changes at the BBC not coming soon enough
The Times reports "TV license fee given death notice". But not until,
FUNDING the BBC through the license fee will become unsustainable and should be reviewed in five years time, advisers to Tessa Jowell, the Culture Secretary, said yesterday.
So we're talking 5 -7 years before it is abolished; way too long.
But hang on a minute, looks like we are going to still be funding this biased organization.
However, because a subscription would be voluntary, less money would go to the BBC, meaning that the broadcaster would have to consider a "combination of funding methods" to replace the license fee. That would comprise "public funding, subscription and income from advertising".
Why? Why should we have to pay from public funds on top of a subscription?
There is already too much waste at the BBC as evidenced by the cutting of jobs and sale of business that are not core to what the BBC are suppose to be.
The peer's review comes just days before the BBC's effort to consolidate itself before the Green Paper. Mark Thompson, the Director-General, will next Tuesday give details of a huge redundancy and restructuring programme that will affect up to 6,000 staff.
And
Another area that could be sold is the BBC's magazines arm, which includes titles ranging from Radio Times to Practical Parenting, although insiders believe the most likely outcome is that the corporation will seek a joint-venture partner to help it develop the operation.
Given their anti-American and pro Palestinian stance and soft touch on terrorism, regulation of the BBC is imperative.
There was also criticism of the BBC's model of governance; governors are currently responsible for both the corporation's management and regulation. Lord Burns held out the possibility of forcing the broadcaster to be regulated externally for the first time, either by Ofcom, the communications regulator, or a special body.
Couldn't happen soon enough.
