Islam's coming civil war with itself

The signs are there.

Earlier I wrote,

I recently posted a link to a The New York Post article about Europe's coming civil war with Muslim extremists.

And the Asia Times then reported "...most European Muslim organizations declined to disavow the murder of van Gogh" and "In Germany, most of the country's Muslim groups refused to take part in this past Sunday's Muslim demonstration in Cologne against terrorism and violence.

While Fox News reports on "Islamic Recruiters Target Potential Jihadees".In France, with more Muslims (search) than any other European nation nearly 6 million that recruitment often starts in the mosque and the ethnic ghettos that ring the capital. [...]On Fridays before prayers, the Imam trolls the housing projects, looking for followers among the weak who may some day be ready to kill in the name of jihad.

There are signs now that some Muslims are fed up with the jihadists.

The Arab News is reporting "Over 2,500 Muslim intellectuals from 23 countries have signed a petition to the United Nations calling for an international treaty to ban the use of religion for incitement to violence."

In America,U.S. Muslim Cable TV Channel Aims to Build BridgesThe station will differ from popular Arabic satellite channels like al-Jazeera in that it is focused on life in America, in English and backed by U.S. money, he said.

Now there are more signs of a coming Islamic civil war.

A few days ago, pop celebrities joined 2,000 people in a march through Marseilles denouncing violence against women, particularly in the immigrant-dominated housing estates. The protest against Islamic “obscurantism” and the “fundamentalism that imprisons women” was led by a group of Muslim women who call themselves Ni Putes ni Soumises (Neither Whores nor Submissive).

Muslims in Norway were organizing a torchlit parade through downtown Oslo this weekend, to decry violence and terrorism and distance themselves from Islamic fundamentalism. Top Norwegian political leaders, including the prime minister, were joining in.

If Muslims truly want to clean up their image, they need to start by taking back the Mosques from the terrorists, change the curriculum in their schools and shut down the madrasses.

But it's not that simple. The majority of Balkan Muslims (in Bosnia, Albania and Kosovo) are Sufis, members and practitioners of a relatively moderate, mystical - some call it a "folk"- branch of Islam. Saudi Arabia's Wahhabis are the sworn enemies of Sufism and part of the mudjahedin military effort in the Balkans throughout the 1990s has been an attempt to infiltrate the local Muslim society, radicalise it and turn it away from what the Wahhabis consider to be a heresy and into the arms of "true" Islam (Stephen Schwartz, a former leftist and himself a convert to Sufi Islam who has spent a lot of time in the Balkans has a lot to say on this issue - see also here). In the end, Wahhabis did not endear themselves to Balkan Muslims, particularly with their efforts to destroy some of the local historic and religious heritage, such as old gravestone, which the fundamentalists consider idolatrous.
