"Yemen's new notoriety doesn't surprise me; what does is how all the warning signs went unnoticed for so long. I saw it in my own flesh and blood: An open-minded family defined by its love of arts and culture embraced hard-line interpretations of Islam and turned its back on social progress and intellectual freedom.
Whatever happens next in Yemen, my family there, and no doubt millions of other middle-class Middle Eastern families, has been losing the war against extremism. "

Obama team continues to control access to Biden
"The book covers Mr. Obama's frustration after Mr. Biden's gaffes became too much for the president-to-be to bear. These gaffes included:Mr. Biden's comments that he was more qualified than Mr. Obama to be president, that Mr. Obama would be tested with an international crisis, and that it was patriotic to pay higher taxes.
“How many times is Biden gonna say something stupid?” Mr. Obama angrily asked of his advisors at one point on a conference call. Speaking of conference calls, the book also says Obama campaign manager David Plouffe was questioned about why Mr. Biden was not on the nightly campaign conference call. It turned out the future vice president was on his own conference call with both Mr. Pouffe and campaign adviser David Axelrod."

Wind farms produced 'practically no electricity' during Britain's cold snap - Telegraph
"The cold weather has been accompanied by high pressure and a lack of wind, which meant that only 0.2pc of a possible 5pc of the UK's energy was generated by wind turbines over the last few days.
Jeremy Nicholson, director of the Energy Intensive Users Group (EIUG), gave warning that this could turn into a crisis when the UK is reliant on 6,400 turbines accounting for a quarter of all UK electricity demand over the next 10 years. "

ClimateGate continues: “Follow the money, not the temperature”
Even regarding Coren’s tedious differentiation between climate and weather (yes, yes, we’ve heard this), it seems the restaurant critic missed one of the key emails in the ClimateGate scandal from Kevin Trenberth, head of the Climate Analysis Section at the National Center for Atmospheric Research: “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.”

Almost half of Britons would oppose mosque being built in their area, finds study | Mail Online
"More than half the population believe Britain is deeply divided along religious lines, according to an official survey.
A majority would also strongly oppose the development of a mosque in their neighbourhood, the research into social attitudes found.
Almost half - 45 per cent - say they do not believe that diversity has brought benefits to the country and that religious diversity has had a negative impact."

I say don't ban the burqa.
Islamic scholars admit that the burqa is not a religious symbol and not even in the Koran. They admit that it is a radical political statement.
If that's the case then the burqa is more like a Nazi uniform. Therefore, by letting them wear "the uniform" we can readily identify the enemy.

The Scariest Jobs Chart Ever
Way to go Obama.
"This chart from Calculated Risk shows the decline in jobs as a percentage of the work force at the peak.
To date in this recession, we've lost more than 8 million jobs. The decline as a percentage of the workforce is the worst since the Great Depression, matching the sharp but short drop in 1948, as the war machine wound down.
Equally important, the duration of these job losses, as well as the lack of a sharp recovery (at least so far), suggests that the problem will be with us for a long while. We're now 24 months into this decline, and we're still at the bottom. By this point in most previous recessions, we had already recovered all of the lost jobs."

Climate change experts clash over sea-rise ‘apocalypse’ - Times Online
Will 2010 be the year that global warming myths die?
"However, the studies, led by Stefan Rahmstorf, professor of ocean physics at Potsdam, have caused growing concern among other experts. They say his methods are flawed and that the real increase in sea levels by 2100 is likely to be far lower than he predicts.
Jason Lowe, a leading Met Office climate researcher, said: "These predictions of a rise in sea level potentially exceeding 6ft have got a huge amount of attention, but we think such a big rise by 2100 is actually incredibly unlikely. The mathematical approach used to calculate the rise is simplistic and unsatisfactory."
The row comes just weeks after the so-called climategate affair when emails leaked from the University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit revealed how scientists tried to withhold data from public scrutiny. "
AP IMPACT: Toxic metal in kids' jewelry from China - SignOnSanDiego.com
"LOS ANGELES — Barred from using lead in children's jewelry because of its toxicity, some Chinese manufacturers have been substituting the more dangerous heavy metal cadmium in sparkling charm bracelets and shiny pendants being sold throughout the United States, an Associated Press investigation shows.
The most contaminated piece analyzed in lab testing performed for the AP contained a startling 91 percent cadmium by weight. The cadmium content of other contaminated trinkets, all purchased at national and regional chains or franchises, tested at 89 percent, 86 percent and 84 percent by weight. The testing also showed that some items easily shed the heavy metal, raising additional concerns about the levels of exposure to children. "

The Label Factor: Is Obama a Wimp or a Warrior?
The New York Times asks? Yes, that New York Times.
And look at the disaster he was.
"It’s not just coming from Republicans (for example, Dick Cheney’s accusation that Mr. Obama is trying to pretend that the country isn’t at war). Now barbs are coming from the center too. This week’s Foreign Policy magazine has a provocative cover: Mr. Obama next to Jimmy Carter with — gasp — an “equals” sign in the middle. New York Times/CBS polling shows that public approval of Mr. Obama’s foreign policy dropped 9 points to 50 percent between last April and November. Leslie H. Gelb, president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, wrote on the Daily Beast blog two weeks ago that Mr. Obama needs to toughen up with his adversaries. “He puts far too much store on being the smartest guy in the room,” Mr. Gelb wrote. “He’d do well to remember that Jimmy Carter also rang all the I.Q. bells.”

Expats out of pocket after Government cuts their benefits - Telegraph
And yet the Govenment pays Polish immigrants for children they leave behind in Poland!
"Yet despite the ruling, the UK Government has stuck with its policy of withholding the payments – prompting a warning from the European Commission that unless Britain falls into line by the end of this month, ministers will be dragged back into court and forced to defend their decisions.
The approach contrasts with the stance taken by the British government on paying benefits to foreigners living in the UK. The Sunday Telegraph revealed last year that in order to comply with European Union rules, Britain is paying child benefit for 37,900 children who have remained behind in Poland while one or both of their parents work in the UK. Climate change: the true price of the warmists' folly is becoming clear - Telegraph
As in any scandal - follow the money.
"At last, in all directions, we are beginning to see the terrifying cost of that obsession with “global warming” and “green energy” which for nearly 20 years has had all our main political parties in its grip. For years governments, including the EU, have been shovelling millions of pounds into the coffers of “green” lobby groups, such as Friends of the Earth and the WWF, allowing them in return virtually to dictate our energy policy. Not for nothing is a former head of WWF-UK now chairman of the Met Office.
The bills for such follies are coming in thick and fast. Last winter’s abnormal cold pushed Britain’s death rate up to 40,000 above the average, more than the 35,000 deaths across Europe that warmists love to attribute to the heatwave of 2003. Heaven knows what this winter will bring. And remember that the cost of the Climate Change Act alone has been estimated by our Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband at £18 billion every year until 2050 – a law that only three MPs in this Rotten Parliament dared oppose. Truly have they all gone off their heads. "

Banning the burqa unveils some nasty traits in us
So claims India Knight writing in the Times.
And yet the answer is as clear as day. Listen to what was said earlier in the article.
Once you know that the burqa is not a religious symbol but an extremist one, then the comparison to Jews and Sikhs is moot. A better comparison would be the burqa to a Nazi uniform. Educate the public to that reality and you can win this argument.
"This last bit seems perfectly sensible but the headscarf issue raised all sorts of questions — the law is opaquely worded and refers only to “ostentatious” religious symbols: would a Sikh boy in a French state school be required to remove his topknot and cut his hair, for instance? Would a Jewish child not be allowed his yarmulke? Would somebody who was vegetarian on religious grounds be offered no alternative to meaty school lunches? Or was the law just against Muslims, adherents to the second largest religion in France?
I find this whole subject uncomfortable because I don’t really know what I think; I change my mind constantly. I start off, as most people would, from the point of view that everyone should be allowed to wear what they like, regardless of how peculiar it might strike others as being, without being dictated to. "
And yet the answer is as clear as day. Listen to what was said earlier in the article.
“We spoke to religious and secular figures, who all confirmed [the burqa] was not a religious prescription. Wearing the full body veil is about extremists who want to test the republic,” he said. "

UK Muslim TV channel linked to al-Qaida cleric al-Awlaki | World news | The Observer
"A London-based satellite broadcaster that describes itself as "the voice of authority for Muslims in the UK" has been accused of giving a platform to Anwar al-Awlaki, the extremist cleric with alleged links to al-Qaida and to the man charged with trying to blow up a transatlantic jet on Christmas Day.
The Islam Channel, a free-to-air English-language channel that claims to be "a trustworthy source to the two million-plus population of Muslims in the UK", last year carried adverts for a box set of DVDs of Awlaki's sermons and for at least two events at which the cleric was due to be the star speaker via a video link."

It's things like this that are causing the downfall of Britain.

"Myleene Klass has been warned by police that waving a knife at youths who had broken into her garden is illegal.
The 31-year-old presenter had been home alone with two-year-old daughter Ava when she saw the teenagers attempting to break into her garden shed through her kitchen window.
Myleene, who had been 'utterly terrified' according to her spokesperson, immediately called the police but quickly grabbed a kitchen knife to wave at the intruders in an attempt to scare them away.
However, when police arrived at the property in Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, they told Myleene that she should not have used the knife because it is still classed as an 'offensive weapon', even if you use it in your own home."

"The first thing I ever heard about Americans was that they all carried guns. Then, when I came across people who’d had direct contact with this ferocious-sounding tribe, I learned that they were actually rather friendly. At university, friends who had traveled in the United States came back with more detailed stories, not just of the friendliness of Americans but also of their hospitality (which, in our quaint English way, was translated into something close to gullibility). When I finally got to America myself, I found that not only were the natives friendly and hospitable, they were also incredibly polite. No one tells you this about Americans, but once you notice it, it becomes one of their defining characteristics, especially when they’re abroad."
