However local sources put the number of Christians at 80,000 owing to the rise in the expatriate population.

UK - The ghastly values of masked Muslim women

The Independent (UK) reports. Yes that Independent.

Adopting the veil may be a sign of resisting globalisation - the spread of "Western" values around the world - and the Iraq war, but it's undeniably linked with the most reactionary religious practices. In that sense, wearing the niqab in this country seems to me both attention-seeking and self-indulgent, a form of protest that's relatively cost-free while failing to acknowledge the courageous struggle of women in Baghdad or Helmand province who daily risk death for the right not to wear it.

It's the worst sort of identity politics, importing ghastly patriarchal values into a country where we already have enough problems with a male political class which believes it knows what's best for us, including ID cards. If there's one thing I long for in the new year, it's seeing both a masked and a surveillance society consigned to the dustbin of history.

Nice to see even the far left wing Independent realizes the true nature of the veil.

UK - PM shelves radical Islamic group ban

Britain surrenders.

The Prime Minister has been forced to shelve a central plank of his 'war on terror' strategy after opposition from senior police officers and the Home Office.

Plans to ban Hizb ut-Tahrir, the radical Islamic group, have been dropped in the past few days following intense discussions between Number 10 and legal advisers. Counter-terrorism sources said Tony Blair had been warned that banning the group, which campaigns for Britain to become a caliphate - a country subject to Islamic law - would serve only as a recruiting agent if the group appealed against the move.

HT is banned in many countries.

Blair, like a lot of politicians, wants to have it both ways. This decision comes on the heels of Blair's remarks against the veil. But, here he sings the praises of Islam.

Typical politician.

UK - Muslims urged to 'Show unity on mega mosque'

Speakers at the Shalom Centre in Manor Park included Newham Respect councillor Abdul Karim Sheikh, Mobeen Anwar from the London Association of Muslim Professionals, Mudassar Ahmad from Newham Public Affairs Committee, and Yusuf Patel from Hizb-ut-Tahrir.

UK - "The fight against homegrown terror"

But according to Islamists and their left wing supporters, this is either Islamophobia or made up by the government to scare you. Even the BBC in their report try and downplay the threat.

Police and security services know if there is an atrocity, their actions will be closely scrutinised. In May this year, two reports into the 7 July London bombings concluded that no-one was to blame except the bombers themselves.

That was back in May and since then much more evidence has emerged as the BBC well knows.

ABC News has also exclusively learned, with chilling detail, from U.S. and British law enforcement sources that investigators from New Scotland Yard and the British domestic security service MI5 have put together physical evidence and a pattern of interlocking relationships between alleged terrorists that appear to establish a firm link among the subway and bus bombs that killed 52 Londoners on July 7, 2005, a failed set of bombings on July 21, 2005 and a plot to blow up between six and nine airliners, killing as many as 5,000 persons headed to the United States this summer, all the result of three years of planning by British al Qaeda.

Note the "British al Qaeda".

There's more.

Each cell appears to have had ties back to the same British citizen who controlled the plotters from Pakistan and whose identity was first reported by the ABC News Investigative Unit, sources said. That link plus forensic evidence and evidence of overlapping knowledge and personnel in each of the plots is more terrifying to authorities than the prior theory of independent cells operating without knowledge of each others' plans, sources said.

But according to the BBC the bombers acted alone and as the BBC's John Simpson put it, they were just "misguided criminals".

Norway - Krekar claims Islam will win

We better hope not.

Norway's most controversial refugee, Mullah Krekar, told an Oslo newspaper on Monday that there's a war going on between "the West" and Islam. He said he's sure that Islam will win, and he also had praise for suspected terrorist leader Osama bin Laden.

"We're the ones who will change you," Krekar told Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet in his first interview since an uproar broke out over cartoons deemed offensive to Muslims.

"Just look at the development within Europe, where the number of Muslims is expanding like mosquitoes," Krekar said. "Every western woman in the EU is producing an average of 1.4 children. Every Muslim woman in the same countries are producing 3.5 children.

"By 2050, 30 percent of the population in Europe will be Muslim."

Let Turkey into the EU and it will higher faster.

And what's this about bin Laden being a "suspected terrorist"?

Attempts to "spread democracy," he claimed, are merely a ruse to wage war against Islam, adding that "the West destroyed the Taliban regime in Afghanistan" because "it feared the Islamic state."

Well, since the Taleban persecuted all other religions, murdered gays, made women subhuman, forbade song and music and a host of other suppressions, as well as exporting terrorism, the west has every right to oppose it.

UK - Channel 4 gives Muslim extremist platform

to spread propaganda.

In the first instance by allowing her on the air in radical Muslim attire. Think of it as someone giving a speech wearing a swastika.

In the second instance the speech itself.

"To look at me you would never guess that my great-grandmother was actually a suffragette", she said.

Since you choose to belong to a religion that suppresses women's rights, you'd be correct.

"One of the great things about Britain is that it is very, very tolerant and I believe it's the best country to live in if you want to be able to freely practise your religion.

Then why do you want to turn it into a Muslim country where all other religions are persecued?

Next she plays the ultimate Muslim card - the victim card.

"We are seen as oppressed. "Since I've started covering I feel much more liberated, which I know a lot of people possibly won't be able to understand.

But you just said that Britain is "the best country to live in if you want to be able to freely practise your religion". You can't have it both ways, either you are oppressed or you are not and since it is Muslims who have and are trying to terrorize us, I put it to you that we are the oppressed ones.

Next up is another favorite Muslim ploy, you have to accept me but I don't have to accept you.

"I don't wear the niqab to separate myself from society. I want to be part of this society - this is where I choose to live. I hope that the society is more accepting of my personal choice. It's not about separation.

It's certainly not about integration. When Muslim scholars declare the veil is not in the Koran, not proscribed by Islamic law and banned in some Muslim countries, then the wearing of it is nothing but a rejection of society.

"It's their personal choice and as a society we need to be more tolerant of people's personal choices."

Not when those choices are a detriment to society. Again, wearing the swastika is not tolerated so, why shoule we accept a radical Muslim symbol?

US - Ellison "Muslims can help teach America about justice"

Really? You mean like in Iran where they hang gays even if they are underage? Or like in Saudi Arabia where Christians and Jews are persecuted? Or like how Islam treats women as inferior to men?

I think Ellison has it backwards. America can teach Muslims a lot about justice, it's why so many of them come to America in the first place.

So, what's Ellison's agenda?

The convention, which ends today, drew more than 3,000 Muslims from across the country for an event aimed at revival and reform. It featured workshops and panels on a range of topics from civil rights to politics to how to spread Islam in the United States.

UK - Muslims forced to lift veil at airports

The Scotsman reports.

VEILED women will be forced to reveal their identities at UK airports under a government plan to tighten security, Scotland on Sunday can reveal.

Home Office insiders last night confirmed that immigration officials will be ordered to impose their legal right to lift the veils of passengers after it emerged a suspected police killer may have escaped the UK dressed as a Muslim woman.

But the plan has been attacked by unions, which claim it would impose intolerable demands on their members, particularly female officers who would be the only ones allowed to look under veils.

Why? The veil is not a religious symbol but is in fact, a radical political statment and is banned in some Muslim countries. Why are we then pussy footing about with this nonsense?

Veils should be banned in public full stop, or, at the very least on all public transport.

UK - Muslims had tried to pray at mosque before PC was shot

And why was that?

That link plus forensic evidence and evidence of overlapping knowledge and personnel in each of the plots is more terrifying to authorities than the prior theory of independent cells operating without knowledge of each others' plans, sources said.

What's even worse, this story proves that Britain is a homebase for al Qaeda.

The plot was three years in the making. The chemistry, electronic and concealment skills of the bomb makers in the plot were excellent, intelligence analysts say.

Through it, British authorities came to see that al Qaeda Britain had emerged, and it had emerged as a lethal spin-off of the historical al Qaeda model developed by Osama Bin Laden. Although its ties to that original core of terrorists is largely inspirational, Al Qaeda Britain has the patience, membership and professionalism of its ancestor.

U.S. and U.K. intelligence sources say one of the formidable hurdles British investigators now face is the potential ease with which terrorists and their supporters can conceal their movements within a large, vibrant set of British Muslim communities. There are about two million Muslims in England, about 700,000 in London alone.

In the judicial sphere, Britain has gone even further, legitimizing sharia compliance even in criminal cases. A key tenet of sharia is that non-Muslims cannot try Muslims, or even testify against them; and this has been upheld by Peter Beaumont, QC, senior circuit judge at London’s Central Criminal Court, the Old Bailey. Before the trial of Abdullah el-Faisal, a preacher accused of soliciting the murder of “unbelievers,” Justice Beaumont announced that, “[f]or obvious reasons, members of the jury of the Jewish or Hindu faith should reveal themselves, even if they are married to Jewish or Hindu women, because they are not fit to arbitrate in this case.” (One can only speculate what would be the reaction if equally “obvious reasons” were invoked in an attempt to exclude Muslims from the trial of BNP Chairman Nick Griffin for “Islamophobia.”)

UK - Inquiry call on 'suspect in veil'

The BBC reports. Lots of disturbing information here.

Labour MP John Denham said sensitivity around veils meant the claim could cause "huge damage".

Why is everyone being so sensitive about them? The veil is not an Islamic religions symbol, is banned in some Muslim countries, is recognized as a radical political statment and Islamic scholars attest to all this.

And this is worrying for air travlers.

The Home Office said the claim was unlikely to be true as women can be asked to lift veils in identity checks.

"Can be asked"? At the very least, shouldn't that be all veil wearers are required to lift their veils in identiy checks. In light of the true nature of the veil they should be banned from travel. Two veil wearing Muslim women blew up a Russian airliner a few years back. In this day and age of Muslim terrorism, it's suicide not to ban them on planes.

US - Things you need to know about the war on terror

Read of the day, so far.

Kilcullen redefined the war on terror as a “global counterinsurgency.” The change in terminology has large implications. A terrorist is “a kook in a room,” Kilcullen told me, and beyond persuasion; an insurgent has a mass base whose support can be won or lost through politics. The notion of a “war on terror” has led the U.S. government to focus overwhelmingly on military responses. In a counterinsurgency, according to the classical doctrine, which was first laid out by the British general Sir Gerald Templar during the Malayan Emergency, armed force is only a quarter of the effort; political, economic, and informational operations are also required. A war on terror suggests an undifferentiated enemy. Kilcullen speaks of the need to “disaggregate” insurgencies: finding ways to address local grievances in Pakistan’s tribal areas or along the Thai-Malay border so that they aren’t mapped onto the ambitions of the global jihad. Kilcullen writes, “Just as the Containment strategy was central to the Cold War, likewise a Disaggregation strategy would provide a unifying strategic conception for the war—something that has been lacking to date.”

by speaking of Saddam Hussein, the Sunni insurgency in Iraq, the Taliban, the Iranian government, Hezbollah, and Al Qaeda in terms of one big war, Administration officials and ideologues have made Osama bin Laden’s job much easier. “You don’t play to the enemy’s global information strategy of making it all one fight,” Kbilcullen said. He pointedly avoided describing this as the Administration’s approach. “You say, ‘Actually, there are sixty different groups in sixty different countries who all have different objectives. Let’s not talk about bin Laden’s objectives—let’s talk about your objectives. How do we solve that problem?’ ” In other words, the global ambitions of the enemy don’t automatically demand a monolithic response.

US - "many similarities between Islam and the Army"

According to the New York Times, the Army is just like Islam.

The ignorance of Andrea Elliott in this report is staggering.

Then her world unraveled. Separated from her husband, who had taken a second wife, and torn from her children, she moved to Brooklyn to start over. Struggling to survive on her own, she answered a recruiting ad for the Army and enlisted in May. Hamdan's passage through the military is a remarkable act of reinvention. It required courage and sacrifice. She had to remove her hijab, the headscarf that is a sacred symbol of the faith she holds deeply. At the age of 39 she had to embrace an arduous and unfamiliar life.

In return, she sought what the military has always promised new soldiers: a stable home, an adoptive family, a remade identity. She left one male-dominated culture for another, she said, in the hope of finding new strength along the way.

Elliot wants to plant the idea that only the poor join the military. She's spreading myths about our soldiers More here and here. Later on you learn the Army wanted her because she spoke Arabic. And what's all this twadle about a stable home, adoptive family and a remade identity? Elliot's implying that those that join the Army come from broken homes, are foster children or are escaping from the law.

Elliot, like most in the media and government, has yet to learn that the veil is not a religious symbol but a radical political statment, is not in the Koran or Islamic law, is banned in some Muslim countries and Muslim scholars attest to all this.

Elliot then drops this on us.

It helped, Hamdan thought, that there were so many similarities between Islam and the Army.

Well, except that in the Army you're allowed to practice whatever religion you want, gays are barely tolerated but at least they're not hung and women are treated as equals instead of being stoned to death for adultry. Yeah, there a lot alike alright.

Continuing her trip down the yellow brick road...

Soldiers, like Muslims, were instructed to eat with one hand. The women ate apart from the men and always walked with an escort, as Muslim women traditionally travel.

I hate to tell you this Elliot but this is done in boot camp and basic training. Once in a regular outfit, this is not the case.

Are you gagging yet? No? Ok, here's more to choke you.

The Army taught soldiers to live with order. They folded their fatigues as women folded their hijabs and woke before sunrise as Hamdan had all her life. They always marched behind a flag, as Muslims had done in the days of the Prophet.

Nothing felt more familiar than the military's emphasis on respect. Soldiers learned to tuck their hands behind their backs when speaking to superiors. When Hamdan tried this with Brannon, she thought of her father. Her eyes automatically dropped to the floor, with customary Muslim modesty.

Excuse me while I visit the toliet.

The difference is Elliot, the Army is marching behind the American flag of freedom which is not out to conquer the world, while the black flag of Islam stands for subjugating the world. And Hamdan isn't dropping her eyes out of modesty but out of fear and oppression.

After all of Elliots fawning over Islam, she relates this nugget.

Brannon, an African-American Baptist from North Carolina, had never met a Muslim before coming to Lackland. He soon concluded that the Muslim women in his charge had survived greater struggles outside the military than anything they would face inside it.

"They've been through a lot," he said.[...]

"It seems like a heavy burden has been lifted from her," Brannon said.

"Greater struggles", "been through a lot" and "a heavy burden"? Why whatever on earth are they talking about? I thought Islam was the religion of peace and tolerance, order, piety and all united behind one big flag? Elliot, you can't have it both ways. Perhaps the fact that, as a Muslim woman, she is not eaqual to a man and as such has to avert her gaze, tolerate many wives, lose her children and eventually be cast out.

Yeah, Elliot, the Army and Islam are a lot alike - in your left wing dellusional brain.

On the Red Cross Abmulance scandal.

The Lebanese Red Cross have been forced, I think by the ICRC, to commission a big investigation. I don’t know if the ICRC will make this public. Certainly in a bid to get a measure of credibility they were willing to invite me to come and see the ‘famous’ roof damaged ambulance in the depot where it’s being held (I know jack about assessing damage though and was short of time, wonder if they would have invited the military guys if they had been available). However they would not confirm or deny that it was the result of a military strike until this investigation is completed.

Obviously then, the ICRC is taking bloggers charges that the story was fabricated very seriously.

On Israelis targeting Red Cross workers.

They talked about the casualties suffered by Red Cross volunteers but didn’t seem to strongly blame either side. Whether this is due to Red Cross policy or not I couldn’t say. However they did say that they could only operate in an area after receiving permission from both sides. Often volunteers didn’t wait and raced off without clearance and ‘incidents’ happened. National staff were certainly shaken by the accuracy of the Israelis – in one incident related by a couple of people the convoy they were in saw a van trailing them targeted and destroyed a matter of a few dozen meters from their vehicles.

Bottom line, Israel did not deliberately target Red Cross workers.

Is UNIFIL helping the situation or hurting?

UNIFIL is relying on Hezbollah to protect it from Islamic extremists, and apparently has for some time. Makes relations tricky. They have been interdicting some resupply, normally when it is left during the day in a mosque. Some UNIFIL Muslim troops ‘coincidentally’ decide to drop in to pray, discover the boxes, everyone looks a bit embarrassed and UNIFIL takes it away. Hez is clearly getting a bit miffed by this as whilst we were there the Spanish found a minefield. The IDF laid some mines so they assumed it was theirs. They posted a shit watch and in the morning went back to discover the hard way some overnight installed AP mines wired to mortar shells 6 yards back. No way were they laid by the IDF overnight. UNIFIL believes Hez is laying these things in a temporary fashion to ensure its operations in an area are not disturbed before they can move on. That security reliance though, combined with previous UNIFIL contingents experiences (the French for instance wound up the locals when they were last there and had to fight a mini insurgency, eventually being trapped in their base for a week until an Irish armoured company came and evacuated the paratroops) means they aren’t the neutral mandate enforcing formation they are supposed to be. If Hez recover their strength I can’t see them taking on a job the Lebanese army refuses.

UNIFIL needs protecting!! Mosques used for ammo dumps makes them a legitimate target.

Were you able to make it to the southern border? Is there widespread destruction or did Israel do a good job of selective targeting?

Close to the border it was a free fire zone after the evacuation, with reports from locals who stayed longer about house to house (note the use of the word house as opposed to non civilian buildings) fighting between the IDF and Hez. According to the army guys with us the damage indicated weapons like heavy calibre guns carried by gunships as well as bombs and artillery. Most of the severely damaged/destroyed buildings have been cleared away but their foundations remain. Typically the further north you go the more selective the devastation is. Beirut is amazing. The level of targeting was something else. It was literally block, block, destroyed block, block, block. The level of precision was incredible. The locals blamed collaborators for this so they were rounded up and tied to roofs of buildings. I didn’t see or hear of any levelled villages however. Some people think the use of cluster munitions in the last three days of the war was a form of area denial (the failure rate has been far higher than expected, 40% for some strikes, no one knows why, some stuff was Chinese maybe that was it, other bombs dated back to the 70’s so were unusually old) but they could have mined areas more extensively or bulldozed villages to achieve the same effect far more reliably – the clusters will be all cleared by next Christmas according to UNMACC.

Hezbollah used civilian houses to fire from and we have video as well as photographic evidence for this. And this is how the Lebanese reacted. "The locals blamed collaborators for this so they were rounded up and tied to roofs of buildings". The precision bombing was confirmed by the Lebanese government as well which proves the BBC were lying in their reports of an entire city destroyed. Does Israel's use of old munitions indicate how unprepared Israel was for this war? This adds to that theory.

Certainly Israel was fighting a PR war with its own citizens. One village when viewed from the south is totally intact, but from the north where you can see the hillside it’s pretty much levelled. Our army guys and UNIFIL’s officers conclusions about the conduct of the war is that Israel is finding it harder to motivate its citizens to fight. The current generation didn’t have to endure wars for their very existence, hence perhaps the reliance on munitions not soldiers. They weren’t helped by the death of some prominent writer’s son.

Who do the Lebanese blame for their troubles?

The issue of Jews/Israel was an interesting one. Some drew a distinction, others used them interchangeably. This was in marked difference to views of America and Britain where the governments were judged separately to the people. Passed one children school where the murals on the wall were a variety of internal peace building ones and propaganda against their southern neighbours, showing things such as captured farmland and Israeli civilians always dressed as soldiers etc.

On Hezbollah.

Hezbullah have completely won the media war there. Everyone will reel off the Hez stats in response to questions. They have got their story out very effectively and it has silenced the others. I think for instance they honestly believe the figure of 60 fighters dead, despite over a dozen people I met saying they knew a martyr – clearly these guys did lecture tours when they weren’t training, or perhaps a few more might be dead. No one will openly disagree with this, though when you get people on their own they talk more. For instance one Hez municipality I went to we got the standard line from the mayor with a picture of nassrila smiling down at us from above before being sent on a Hezbollah guided tour (high point being shown a very modern donor built bombed museum – our barely out of uniform guide looking sad and saying no-one knows why the IDF dropped bombs on it 20 times, we didn’t either until one UNIFIL guy pointed out underneath the museum is a massive cavern that was used by Vichy French in WWII as a field hospital). But when we stepped outside I and another colleague got the chief engineer (a guy recently back from Canada) on his own and his view was that those closest to Hezbollah got the cash and more of it, and if you accepted you were beholden. Similar views were echoed by other families, in essence you went on a list and it was seen as tacit approval of Hezbollah and an acceptance that they could use your house when needed. As a result those not in the party already if they had the money and could say no sometimes did.

Western media can take credit for Hezbollah's media win. They did everything they could to ensure Hezbollah won that one. He told me in an earlier email that UNIFIL's estimate of Hezbollah killed in the war was 900.

Showing how media savvy Hezbollah is, he had this to say about the recent protests.

Protest wise if you are in the main media areas it’s a sea of Lebanese flags, however go into the side streets supporters are allowed to fly Hez flags, again an example of the excellent spin machine they possess. This even extends to the south. Pictures of martyrs abound but more extremist pictures are absent – with one notable exception, the pr boys missed a poster of the guys who attacked the USS Cole (right ship?) with the ship in the background at one rural intersection.

Any truth to the rumour that all the money Hez was spreading around was
really counterfeit US currency?

I think they would have been lynched. Lebanon is 75% dollarised according to gov statistics. No way banks or companies would accept dodgy notes.

Islam - Gay March to Mecca

I've been shaming the left over this for years. When is the Left going to start standing up for women's rights and when are they going to denounce Islam's intolerance to other religions?

Here's who's behind the march.

Human Rights Watch, Moveon.org, ACT-UP, the Huffington Post and David Geffen are proud to present the March to Mecca, a celebration of peace that calls all gay brothers, sisters and people undergoing sex-reassignment to march to the holiest of holy cities, Mecca, the capital city of Saudi Arabia's Makkah province on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2007.

While you're there, how about you and Jimmy Carter erecting a church.

I wonder if CAIR was invited and if so, did they decline?

And an apology from Sharon Stone!?!

The march, a brainchild of activists and celebrities who acknowledge that more gays are dying from Islamic fundamentalism than from the policies of George W. Bush, will begin 12 noon sharp in Jeddah, the stunning night-life friendly Saudi Arabian city located on the coast of the Red Sea.

"Not marching in these countries, in this era of terror, seems cowardly," says event co-organizer Sharon Stone. "I'm embarrassed to say at social gatherings I even blamed the United States for everything. But I realized it's the radical Muslims - not the US - who want gays dead, and for that I am truly sorry."

Amazing! The far left owning up to their we hate America mantra. See, that wasn't so hard. Keep at it and you'll once again realize that America is not the root of all evil. You might even finally awake to the far greater danger Islam poses.

Oh, it gets better.

Beth Ditto, lead singer of the Gossip, who will perform with the newly reformed Yaz, thinks the march is overdue. "Forget right wing Christians. They don't hang gays for being gay. Islamofascists do. That's why were asking moderate, non-violent Muslims across the Western Province to join hands and embrace gay people everywhere."

"Almost half of all Muslim countries outlaw gay relations," says Huffington Post contributor Gene Stone, "and more than 70 countries ban all homosexuality, sometimes making it punishable by death. And here I am, blogging about how bad Renew America is. LOL."

Yeah, yuck, yuck, snort, snort.

Did someone in LA spike the water with a huge dose of reality?

"Think about the two teenagers convicted of homosexuality who were hanged in Iran last year," says Harry Shearer, "It makes all the hay we made over Mark Foley at the Huffington Post seem stupid. I, for one, am tired of being part of the problem."

Erm, that would because you leftoids are stupid but at least you're waking up and smelling the coffee.

So, how's about taking a few Jews and Christians along on your march? And why not hold a "burn the burqa" party?

This is just too rich.

WHEN people around the world sent millions of pounds to help the stricken Indonesian province of Aceh after the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004, few could have imagined that their money would end up subsidising the lashing of women in public.

But militant Islamists have since imposed sharia law in Aceh and have cornered Indonesian government funds to organise a moral vigilante force that harasses women and stages frequent displays of humiliation and state-sanctioned violence.

Bush creates activists' funding

Good idea.

US - AP "You can't handle the truth"

Princeton speaks out against the AP.

Unlike Reuters, who fired the reporter who doctored his photographs and pulled all his work, the AP continues to stonewall. Big mistake.

That the story is wrong is beyond debate; even the AP now refers to one burned mosque, not four, so the question is not "if" but "how badly" the AP screwed up. Yet instead of an apology, the AP's response to criticism has been to shoot the messenger. The story first broke on the conservative blog www.floppingaces.net and grew quickly within a circle of other conservative blogs and opinion columns. The AP alleged that this was simply a "mad blog rabble" attacking an entirely reputable source. This ignores the fact that Hussein only became a story after the U.S. military and Iraqi government demanded but did not receive a retraction of the original faulty report.

So why have traditional media sources not reported this controversy? Because it is not in their interests to undermine the AP. This summer's "fauxtography" scandal at Reuters, in which photographers were found to have photoshopped evidence of Israeli atrocities during the Hezbollah war, did not hit at the underlying narrative. The storyline stayed the same with different details. If the AP has to issue a correction for all 61 stories in which Hussein was quoted, it will call into question fundamental perceptions about what is happening in Iraq. If Hussein isn't real, it suggests that there are other as yet undiscovered fakes.

If our media is reporting as fact attacks that never occurred substantiated by witnesses who don't exist, then we have a problem. Public opinion about distant events is necessarily based on what is reported in the press. Therefore, we need to be confident that what we read is real. If we have to look at every source with suspicion and fight over every figure, our country cannot make necessary decisions about this war.

No "if" about it.

US - CBS still distorting the news

This CBS report is a prime example of how the left wing media distort the news for their own ends.

Listen to this:

(AP) Outed CIA operative Valerie Plame, who is at the center of a criminal case involving the former chief of staff for Vice President Cheney, is moving to Santa Fe, N.M., with her husband, former ambassador Joseph Wilson. [...]

Former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby faces charges of perjury and obstruction in connection with Plame's name being leaked to reporters. Libby, whose trial is to begin next month, is accused of lying to investigators about his conversations with reporters regarding Plame.

Plame believes the administration leaked her name to reporters as retribution for her husband's criticism of intelligence before the Iraqi war.

Wilson in 2002 discounted reports that then-Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein tried to buy yellowcake uranium from Niger to make a nuclear weapon. The claim wound up in President Bush's 2003 State of the Union address.

Notice how CBS reports the Plame "believes" the administration leaker her name. Plame may well believe it but she, and CBS, knows that Richard Armitage of the State Department, an opponent of the war in Iraq, has admitted he leaked her name and not the Administration.

And Wilson may have discounted reports on Iraq's attempts to buy Uranium from Niger, but Wilson and CBS again, both know that all subsequent independent investigations show that Wilson's report actually bolster the case, not weaken it.

Also left out of the report is the fact that no one, including Armitage who admits he's the guilty party, has been indicted for leaking Plame's name. Further, Fitzpatrick has stated publicly that he will not be seeking any indictments for the leaking of Plame's name.

An investigation is under way to see whether there is any connection between his unusual behavior and a terrorism plot. Federal authorities were alerted by instructors at the Nationwide Tractor Trailer Driving School in Smithfield, R.I., WLVI reported.

The student was described as a resident of New York, with driver’s licenses from New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

“Every indicator was there,” R.I. State Police Major Steve O’Donnell told WLVI. “Any one of these things alone is fine, but four or five together . . . ”

Now if the BBC were to report this, the fact that he is Muslim would be left out and you'd be left out wondering why he was arrested.

UK - London's 'Walking Dirty Bomb'

US - The truth from the Washington Post?

Compare this Post report with the BBC's and London's mad mayor's love affair with Castro.

By way of contrast, Fidel Castro -- Mr. Pinochet's nemesis and a hero to many in Latin America and beyond -- will leave behind an economically ruined and freedomless country with his approaching death. Mr. Castro also killed and exiled thousands. But even when it became obvious that his communist economic system had impoverished his country, he refused to abandon that system: He spent the last years of his rule reversing a partial liberalization. To the end he also imprisoned or persecuted anyone who suggested Cubans could benefit from freedom of speech or the right to vote.

The contrast between Cuba and Chile more than 30 years after Mr. Pinochet's coup is a reminder of a famous essay written by Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, the provocative and energetic scholar and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations who died Thursday. In "Dictatorships and Double Standards," a work that caught the eye of President Ronald Reagan, Ms. Kirkpatrick argued that right-wing dictators such as Mr. Pinochet were ultimately less malign than communist rulers, in part because their regimes were more likely to pave the way for liberal democracies. She, too, was vilified by the left. Yet by now it should be obvious: She was right.

In Egypt--where some 80 percent of women are now veiled, according to sociologist Mona Abaza--the dean of Helwan University has recently expelled female students for wearing the niqab. Interestingly, Soad Saleh, a former dean of the female faculty and Islamic law professor at the most prestigious Islamic university in the world, Cairo's Al-Azhar, confirmed that the niqab is not an obligation. Gamal al-Banna, brother of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood, goes further: "Neither the Koran, nor the hadith require women to wear a headscarf."

Even Yusuf al-Qaradawi says there's no obligation to wear the veil.

“It is not obligatory for Muslim women to wear the niqab. The majority of Muslim scholars and I do not support the niqab in which women cover their faces.” khalid hasan

Here in Britain, Muslim scholars agree there is no obligation in Islam to wear the veil.

Dr Abdul Bary Mailk, president of the Bradford and Leeds Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, said wearing the full face veil, or niqab, was not an obligation under Islam.

Egypt's religion minister says the veil is not a religious symbol.

Cairo, 13 Oct. (AKI) - The niqab, a Muslim headdress that leaves only the eyes exposed, is not a religious object, Egypt's religion minister said Friday, entering the debate started by British ex-minister Jack Straw, who said he asked Muslim women visiting him to show their faces to facilitate dialogue. "Nor is the niqab a duty deriving from the Sharia" added Mohammad Hamdi Zaqzouq. "I know I will be criticised for my words but I think some Muslims are committing a fundamental error, focusing on external and superficial aspects, without exploring more relevant themes, and hence providing a distorted image of Islam" he said.

The veil is even banned in some Muslim countries.

However, the most divisive controversy erupted not in Europe, but in Tunisia, where the government launched a campaign to implement "Decree 108," first issued in 1981, which forbids not only the full veil (niqab) in public places, but also the less restrictive head covering (hijab).

Other Muslim countries have bans or restrictions on the veil because it is a political statement and not a religious symbol

But often forgotten amid such controversies in Europe - which tend to center on allegations of "Islamophobia" or the desire of Western nations to control a minority community - is the fact that nowhere is the debate over the Islamic veil older or more heated than in Muslim societies themselves.

From Morocco and Tunisia, to Turkey and Iran, majority Muslim states have at various times restricted, and in some cases banned, women's head coverings. To varying degrees, such restrictions stem from a view that public exhibitions of religious commitment are a political, not a personal, act - and hence a potential threat to the government.

What conclusions can we draw from the fact that Muslim scholars admit the veil is not an Islamic religious symbol and many Muslim countries ban it? To me it's clear, the veil is a political statement and as such, officials are right to ban it.

US - Bus Officials Apologize to Muslim Woman

This case illustrates why Government officials need to be educated about Islam and quickly.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Public transit officials have apologized to a woman wearing an Islamic facial veil who was turned away from a bus and Friday rescinded a rule banning people with face coverings.

The ban was aimed at riders wearing Halloween or ski masks and officials had not considered religious dress, Rapid bus system spokeswoman Jennifer Kalczuk said. The rule was issued earlier this year so that an on-board camera system could help identify riders if there is a disturbance.

The veil is not an Islamic religious dress but a radical Muslim political statement and Muslim scholars admit that. In fact, the veil is banned in many Islamic countries for that reason. Officials are right to ban them.
