There is no such thing as a "back door" draft

Kerry and the Democrats keep complaining that by extending military terms of enlistments that this amounts to a "back door" draft. This is completely false. Everyone who joins the military knows exactly what they are signing up for.

Here (in pdf) is the contract all military people sign when they join.

Here is the pertinent section of the contract.

d. As a member of the Ready Reserve I may be required to perform active duty or active duty for training without my consent (other than as provided in item 8 of this document) as follows:

(1) in time of national emergency declared by the President of the United States, I may be ordered to active duty (other than for training) for not more than 24 consecutive months.

When military members enlistments are extended it is called "stop loss". That is a military term that doesn't register with the voters. So, the Democrats call it a "back door" draft since the word draft is a scare word.

Funny, the Democrats didn't seem to mind when Clinton did it in Kosovo.

In addition to trying to scare people with the so called "back door" draft Kerry is trying to scare people with bringing back the draft. Here are the reasons that the draft is not needed and why it will not come back.
